Hey there, GetFed! @kanewolf pretty much said it all.

Due to a system limitation, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista can only create 32GB FAT32 partitions, regardless of the drive's capacity. Plug the drive in. Connect the Western Digital My Passport hard drive to the computer. External Drive for Mac to Windows 10. If you’ve got a WD external drive for Mac platforms and you want it to work on a Windows 10 PC, exFAT format is your best bet.

You won't be getting the desired performance if you keep your external connected to the router, unless it's a network-specific drive (NAS). I suppose the best way to back up both your Mac and Windows computers would be to either to divide the external into 2 partitions (NTFS for Windows OS and HFS+ for Mac OS) or you could simply use the FAT32 file system to be able to access (read and write) the content on the drive from either one computer. However, the FAT32 format comes with some limitations you should be aware of, here's a link from our KB that lists them: I'd also suggest you a link that explains how to convert the formats through Disk Management: Hope these help.
